Talland's Blog 12.1.24

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

We hope everyone had a Christmas filled with joy and your 2024 has begun in high spirits! It's great seeing Talland back, eager to learn and full of enthusiasm!

We kick started the week with our new enquiry question: 'WHO'S GOT THE POWER?'
We've been asking questions like:
- Who's was/is the most powerful person in the world?
- What's was/is the most powerful animal?
- Who's got or had the most powerful mind?
- What's the most powerful form of weather?
- What really is mightier: the pen or the sword?
And the list goes on...

This question has lead us down the path of Thomas Edison. Ask your child what he is most famous for.

In English we are writing and this week we have been looking into the life of Thomas Edison and what is was that gave him power?

In maths, Year 4 and Year 5 had begun that second unit on multiplication and division. Year 4 have been diving into factors and their products. Year 5 have been multiplying 4-digit numbers by 1 digit numbers. Why not ask your child if they can show off some of their new skills.

This will be a scientific unit so many experiments will be covered, which link nicely to computing and Design and Technology. This should be a fantastic term full of lots of powerful thinking.

Not only that, but, you'll have some amazing dancers by the end of this term (obviously lots of Talland are already very talented on the dance floor), BUT, Even the footballer's have been demonstrating some super cool moves too!

Well done to Lily this week for achieving her 99 club badge. Great effort Joey for being chosen as pupil of the week and a HUGE well done to all of those children who are practicing their times tables, reading at home and bringing in their reading records everyday!

Please remember that ALL PE kits should be in school by now. PE is on Monday (Netball) and Tuesday (Dance).

I have  attached this terms KIRFS for both year groups!

We hope you have a lovely weekend!

Signing off from Mr. Langley, Mr. Bishop and Mrs. Hodge.

We have had a busy week in Chaipel class this week. We now have an understanding of how Hitler rose to power and the subsequent events leading up to the start of WW2. We have created timelines, investigated Hitler's life and written about Germany's initial invasion into certain countries within Europe.

English
We are building up to writing a letter home through the eyes of an evacuee but firstly, we needed to gather information about what life was like in London during the Blitz and compare that to life in rural Cornwall. Chaipel have written some incredible pieces, depicting  the war-torn streets of London and the contrasting serenity of the Cornish coast. Next week, we will build on this and begin to plan our letter in detail.

Maths
Y6 have been multiplying, dividing and finding fractions of amounts this week and Y5s have been working with mixed numbers. We will move on, next week, to investigating Units of Measure as this is an area that both year groups are finding tricky.

In Science, we are learning about electrical circuits and Chaipel have been investigating how to connect circuits together and draw diagrams using the symbols for their components. We will move onto learning Morse Code and will use the circuits to send messages to each other! We have been creating motifs to WW2 in Dance this week and will move onto learning how to Jitterbug! Music is also heavily WW2 based so look out for an update very soon...

I have attached the Knowledge Web, KIRFs for this half term and Chaipel's homework grid. Please keep up the daily reading and spelling practice!

Take care and have a great weekend!

Miss Randle, Mrs Clary and Miss Gilbert.

An active week...

We have a had a cold but enjoyable week, especially on the playground where the children have been testing out our new playtime huff and puff kit. This is part of our commitment to ensure the children have at least 30 minutes active time at school every day.

PE Kits A reminder that children should have a complete PE kit in school every day. We have noticed that some of the children have not had their PE kits in school this week. PE is a very important part of our curriculum and the children should bring their kit in on the first day of the half term and keep it in school and we will send it home if it needs a wash. With the weather getting colder, please send your child in with joggers for PE as each class does at least one outside PE session each week. If you have any good condition kit that your child has grown out of, we would welcome it in school, including trainers and plimsolls.

Football Please find attached a useful information sheet for parents/pupils to find different football opportunities in the local community.

Clubs Reminder that clubs restart next week. There is still time to sign up by email or by calling the office.

Census Day On Thursday 18th January it is the National School Census Day when the Government collects information about our school that helps with future funding. We would like to encourage as many children as possible to have school lunch on this day, including Reception, Y1 and Y2 children, along with the children who are eligible for free school meals. The menu for this day is attached below.  Please make your selection via ParentPay.

Have a great weekend.

This week we have got stuck in to our enquiry question, “What happens in winter?”
We have certainly had the cold weather to match this!
The children have enjoyed exploring ice outside in the tuft tray and we even had a sprinkle of snow on Tuesday to explore.
We have been busy starting some winter crafts. The children have made snowy trees, sponge printed winter hats and we have been exploring big and small using the paint to make snowballs.

We have been looking at some winter stories including “The smiley snowman” and we have been having discussions about how we keep warm in winter with the children showing off their lovely hats and gloves.

We will continue this enquiry question next week.
Have a lovely weekend

New year, new learning!

It is lovely to have everyone back after the Christmas break. We have been immersing ourselves in our new enquiry, World War II, beginning with how Europe was ruled pre-WWII and which countries were under which regimes. Chaipel have compiled a timeline of war events - discussing how these impacted upon and steered the course of the Allies victory over the Axis. The children are so engaged with this enquiry and are looking forward to investigating this further.

We will link (as always) our English to our enquiry, learning about the children's evacuation to the country, and will write an informal letter through the eyes of an evacuee to their family. We will investigate and describe scenes during the Blitz and compare them to the tranquility of the Cornish coast where some children would have been billeted to.

In Maths, we are still working on Fractions. Y5s are converting, adding and subtracting mixed numbers whilst Y6s are multiplying and dividing. In Science, we will be learning about circuits and using Morse Code to send messages, WWII-style. Music will begin next week with Mrs Butlin teaching the children some WWII songs and I will be teaching them the Jitterbug in Dance! Exciting times ahead.

I have compiled a knowledge web, homework grid and the KIRFs for this half term and they will be attached to the blog next week.

For now, enjoy the weekend and see you all on Monday.

Miss Randle and Mrs Clary.

Welcome back!
It has been a short week but it has been lovely to see the children back to nursery.
We have had some lovely conversations about Christmas and the children were all excited to talk about what they did at Christmas.
The children have all been settling back well into nursery life and we have started talking about our new enquiry question "What happens in winter?"
We will explore this in greater detail when we return next week.

Have a nice weekend everyone

A warm welcome back and Happy New Year to you all.

The children have settled into their learning quickly this week and have started their enquiries as follows: What happened in London a long time ago? Penhallow Class; How far can we travel? Landaviddy Class; Who’s got the power? Talland Class; How did World War Two affect different people in society? Chaipel Class.

Bridge Schools Animations Each school in the Trust created an animation inspired by their values and these were linked together to tell the story of the Bridge Schools Values. The animations were shared with all children in the Trust in a special assembly this afternoon. Well done to Joel and Ava whose excellent contribution from our school showed the value of being Responsible.

Clubs Please note that there will be no wraparound After School Club on Wednesday 10th January because of staff training. Lunchtime and After School Clubs will restart the week commencing 15th January, apart from Running Club as there is a league race on the Friday (details to follow).

Clubs we are offering this half term are:
Monday: Lunchtime CONSTRUCTION CLUB for YR, Y1 and Y2 with Mrs Taylor; After School GYMNASTICS CLUB for Y1, Y2 and Y3

Tuesday: After school FOOTBALL CLUB for Y3, Y4, Y5 and Y6 with Mr Langley

Friday: After school RUNNING CLUB for Y3, Y4, Y5 and Y6 with Mrs Turnbull. This club will not run when the Cross-Country League races are on. This club is open to anyone who likes running. Pupils who attend do not have to race in these events.

Please let us know by email or phone call, which clubs you wish your child to attend by midday on Wednesday 10th January. For all clubs, once signed up children will be expected to attend every week unless they have written parental permission not to, or are absent. This applies to both lunchtime and after school clubs.

These are the main messages for you at the moment as we start back.

I look forward to working with you all this year.

15.12.2023

We have enjoyed another festive filled week in Penhallow where we started the week with a fabulous Christmas assembly Reverend Richard. We were able to 'wow' him with our knowledge of the Christmas story, we really enjoyed learning more about how Christians celebrate Christmas.

The highlight of our week was of course our Nativity performance, we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. The children all did a fantastic job and I was so proud of them for putting in their best efforts. It was a very Wriggly Nativity!

To continue with our topic, What Can We Celebrate? we looked at the history of Christmas, learning that a lot of our traditions come from Victorian times as well as investigating how Christmas is celebrated around the world.

We look forward to enjoying two more days at school next week before breaking up for the Christmas Holidays! On Tuesday, we will celebrate the end of term with a Christmas Party Day, please send children in, in their party clothes (warm enough for the playground too) and also a plate/packet of party food would be most welcome!

I will be sure to update the TwinklGO! with more great books and games for the children to enjoy over the holidays!

Well done to Finn and Iylah for being our 'People of the Week' this week for guiding our Nativity perfectly with their brilliantly, confident narration in our class performance.

We hope you enjoy a lovely weekend!

Talland's Blog 15.12.23

What an end to an incredibly fun week! Such a tough job choosing pictures from this week -  there were so many amazing photos to pick!

I must take my hat off to both Talland and Chaipel. Their performances in the shows were just fantastic (the bear was pretty good too...Haha)! Thank you so much for all of your help preparing the children for the show and getting their costumes ready - they looked brilliant! Furthermore, thank you again for getting your child to look like an Anglo-Saxon. Lots of dressing up and once again, WOW! What an amazing result! We looked like a real clan of Angles, Saxons and Jutes! Our Anglo-Saxon day was brilliant. The children had a such a lovely time. We began as archeologists visiting a 'dig' site where we found LOTS of Anglo-Saxon artefacts ranging from weaponry to jewels. We then decided where we travelled from (Northern/ Southern Denmark or Germany and the Netherlands) and whether that made us an Angle, a Saxon or a Jute. We gave our selves Anglo-Saxon names and joined our chosen tribe.
We then learnt about the push and pull factors of why someone may invade or settle somewhere else, linking to modern day situations. Following on from this, we wrote persuasive letters to neighboring warlords asking for help.  We then found out the features of a typical Anglo-Saxon village and created our own village. We also spoke about crime and punishment - in terms of punishment, the world has certainly changed! Finally, we needed to build a solid wall to make sure we had sturdy housing incase we were invaded. We made 'Wattle and Daub' walls for our houses. You may have noticed this got a little mucky...apologies!

Like a mentioned at the beginning - what a fantastic week!

A huge congratulations to all of the children who passed their 99 club this week and a special mention for Joey, who was our visible learner of the week. A massive well done to everyone and what a super Autumn term 2 we've had!

We hope you're all prepared for Christmas (not long now) and you all have a fabulous weekend!

Signing off from Mr. Langley, Mr. Bishop and Mrs. Hodge.

It’s been a wonderful festive week and great to see so many of you enjoying the children’s Christmas performances. Landaviddy’s Christmas Fireside Nativity performances yesterday were so enjoyable with super singing, acting and costume changes. Very well done also to Penhallow who delivered two wonderful performances of their Wriggly Nativity, remembering their lines and the songs brilliantly, and also to Talland and Chaipel Classes whose Bethlehem Bandits made everyone laugh out loud. Nursery's performance at the end of today was lovely and has certainly put me in the Christmas mood. Look out for photos from the performances on the class blogs.

RSPCA The School Council is delighted to have raised a very generous £150 from your donations to their chosen charity, the RSPCA, after each performance.

Keeping your Child Safe Online I attach a leaflet which contains many important links to help you keep your child safe online, particularly at this time of year. The leaflet contains important safety points to consider if your child is likely to receive a SMART device (TV, Speaker—Alexa, Google); new mobile phone (Android/iPhone); games console; tablet PC or laptop for Christmas.

Parenting Workshops January – March 2024 Please find attached to this blog a list of free parenting courses run by Cornwall Council, Together for Families.

End of Term The last day of this term is next Tuesday and school ends at 3:15. Each class will have a party to celebrate Christmas. Please send your child in in Christmas MUFTI or party clothes (warm enough to play outside at breaktimes) with some party food to share. If your child has any food allergies that we do not already know about, please email us on secretary@polperroprimary.co.uk by Monday 18h December.

Have a lovely weekend

Y6 Bloggers are here...

We started off the week by going 'rehearsals mad' and then doing a fantastic job performing for our parents and carers on Tuesday. It was a really busy day but we all enjoyed ourselves and pulled off an amazing performance! As well as our own play this week, we watched Penhallow and Landaviddy's dress rehearsals; they were amazing too!

Aside from the play this week, we have started our final space composition in art with a Retro-Futuristic theme. Watch this 'space' for some examples of the fabulous work that we've been doing! We ended the week with a morning of Science, learning about how the Sun and Earth work together, giving us seasons and how the movement of the Moon affects high and low tides. - ROSIE GRACE

We have completed our investigation into creating animation on Scratch and used a range of algorithms to design a narrative. Its been so fun and we have learnt alot!

Although Christmas is just around the corner and we are very excited, Miss Gilbert is sadly leaving us today as she has completed her teacher training. We wish her all the best and hope she will come back to see us one day. - DAISY

CONGRATULATIONS to our people of the week: Jack G, Ava and Phoebe for being recognised for applying our school values [determination, creativity, enthusiasm, being excellent being responsible and being curious].

Remember - we are in school for two days next week and break up on Tuesday. The last day of school is our Christmas party day so arrive in fancy clothes and if you can bring in some food to share, that would be amazing! - JACK C

Take care and see you all next week!

Landaviddy Christmas Nativity 2023!

Well our last full week before the Christmas holiday's is over. Thank you to everyone who came to watch our Fireside Nativity on Thursday. All the children worked so hard to produce a fantastic show. We hope you enjoyed it! We were amazed by the dedication everyone showed to learning their lines and songs! You are all superstars!

In English this week, we have continued to explore Shape Poetry and how we can using amazing vocabulary when writing descriptive phrases. Next week, we will have a go at writing our own winter themed shape poems. In Maths, Y2 have been adding equal groups and Y3 have been consolidating their learning of our addition and subtraction unit by completing their post assessment.

As part of our Enquiry, we compared our homes with Stone Age houses, and recognised the similarities and differences between them. We will aim to conclude our Enquiry 'What was new about the Stone Age?' next week.

Congratulations to Reuben for being Landaviddy's Person of the Week! And a big well done to Amber for achieving her 44 club, Heidi, Flora and Everly for their 55 club and Harley for his 88 club!

What a busy but lovely week we have had at nursery. We started off the week on Monday joining with the other classes and watching Penhallow's nativity dress rehearsal before attending a lovely assembly with the Reverend Richard in the afternoon. The children all sat beautifully and listened very well.
The children have been very busy completing different Christmas craft and have enjoyed making and decorating special Christmas biscuits to take home.
It has been a week of dress rehearsals and singing to get ready for our Nursery nativity performance which was this afternoon. The children all did such a fantastic job and looked amazing.

We look forward to the last two days next week, where we will be enjoying Christmas dinner on Monday and our party on Tuesday.

See you next week

The Christmas fun has begun with full sparkle in Penhallow this week. We have enjoyed lots of creative, Christmas, crafting fun!

We continue with our amazing phonics learning and we are putting this into practice in our English lessons where we are writing a 'missing' part from the Stickman story. The children have come up with fantastic ideas of what happens to Stickman when he drifts off to sea. I look forward to seeing what adventures he gets up to!

In maths, we are at the end of our addition and subtraction topic and we will move onto looking at 2D shapes next week before the Christmas break.

We enjoyed a fantastic day on Tuesday where the children moved around the school in groups creating marvellous Christmas crafts in the school Art Day. On Thursday, the children enjoyed picking a gift in the gift room and on Friday it was lovely to see the children enjoying the Christmas Fayre.

We have been very busy getting ready for our Nativity which is on Wednesday at 11am and 2pm. We are so excited to perform to you! We have the dress rehearsal on Monday, where we perform to the rest of the school. Please ensure your child's outfit is in school ready for this performance. If your child has a speaking part, please ensure that they practice this over the weekend.

Well done to the following children for getting certificates this week:
Readers of the Week, Alfie and Felix.
Writers of the Week, Martha and Jemima.

Penhallow's People of the week were Rosie and Ida this week for their enthusiasm shown in the Nativity rehearsals.

We have had an extremely busy week; working hard practising our play and enjoying lots of Christmas themed learning.

On Tuesday, we had lots of fun taking part in Christmas Art Day across the school. On Thursday, we all wore our Christmas jumpers and couldn't wait to choose our gifts for wrapping. Today, we had the Christmas Fayre which really raised our Christmas spirits!

In Maths, Year 2 have completed their post assessments for their Addition and Subtraction unit and have started new work on Multiplication and Division. Year 3, have continued to persevere with looking at how to estimate and use inverse operations to check the accuracy of calculations.

In English, we have continued to look at poetry and identified our likes and dislikes of some lovely winter-themed poems.

In Art, we finally got round to completing our Stone Age cave art, using charcoal and pastels. We collated our creations to create a wall display, which looks fantastic.

Well done to Landaviddy's People of the Week: George and Jamie. Congratulations to our Readers of the week: Oliver and Flora, and to our Writers of the week: Nevaeh and Lily. A big well done to Anya for achieving her 44 club badge this week too!

We are very excited to share with you our Fireside Nativity on Thursday! Everyone has been working so hard on this. Please continue to learn your lines and songs at home and if you haven't done so already, bring in your costumes.

It was lovely to see so many of you at the Christmas Fayre at the end of another busy week in school. We are delighted that our Christmas Gift Shop on Thursday raised over £250 and today’s Christmas Fayre raised over £450 for school. A huge thank you to FOPS for organising these events.

On Monday, our amazing choir held their second concert with Keltique, entertaining everyone with their wonderful singing. They raised £90 for the Polperro Chapel Roof, School Music and Keltique’s charity Ellie’s Haven. The choir also sang beautifully at Atlantis Care Home on Thursday and at the Christmas Fayre. Thank you to Mrs Butlin for arranging the concert and running the choir.

We are looking forward to seeing you at the Christmas performances next week; the children have been very busy rehearsing. If your child is in the Landaviddy Class play or the Talland and Chaipel Class play, they will be required to come back for the evening performance at 5:30pm in order to be ready for 6pm.

Reminder that for next week and the week after there will be no clubs except for afterschool wraparound club and Breakfast Club which will continue as usual. Clubs will restart in January and we will send a letter out about which ones will be running.

End of Term Christmas lunch is on Monday 18th and on Tuesday 19th December, classes will be having their Christmas parties. Your child is welcome to come in wearing their party clothes on the day. Please could they bring a small amount of party food to share. The last day of term is on Tuesday 19th December and the first day of the Spring term is Thursday, 4th January.

Have a lovely weekend.

Busy, Busy!

What a busy week we've had!

Some of Chaipel children have been singing as part of our school choir this week. On Monday, they joined with Keltique choir to perform an early evening Christmas service in our local chapel and then an afternoon performance on Thursday  for the residents of Atlantis Care Home. They were absolutely amazing and did the school, and themselves, proud.

Our Christmas play, BETHLEHEM BANDITS, has really ramped up a gear and we are ready for next week's performances. We have a matinee sitting at 2pm and then an evening on at 6pm.

POLITE REMINDER

Your child does need to attend both performances on that day as each and every role in the play plays a part in the storyline.

We have been immersed in ICT this week. Y5s had a morning, learning how to animate and have put together a sequence which will become part of a whole Bridge Schools Trust animation which will be revealed in the new year. Chaipel have also been learning about coding and are currrently planning an animation narrative involving speech, backdrop switch, sound, sprite hide and show and broadcast and receive algorithms. I think they are teaching me more than I am them!

We ended the week with our Christmas Fayre. Thank you for your support - our class really enjoyed making and running the games today.

All that is left for me to say is - HAVE A LOVELY WEEKEND AND SEE YOU ALL ON MONDAY!

Miss Randle, Miss Gilbert and Mrs Clary.

Talland's Blog 8.12.23

What a lovely arts and crafts week we've had! It was great seeing all the festive Christmas jumpers and watching all of Polperro enjoy fun and creative art activities. The children made some wonderful crafts! We began weaving our Anglo-Saxon Landscapes - I'm looking forward to the finished article and not tying anymore knots.

In maths, the year 5's have been working hard with fractions - finding mixed equivalent fractions and adding them has proved to be a little tricky this week. We will get there though! The year 4's have been practicing the 3-, 6-, 7-, 9-, 11- and 12- times tables and noticing how they link with division problems. Why not quiz your little mathematician this weekend...

In English, we've realised how much fun you can have when adding dialogue to a story - it's much more entertaining being able to read when there is speech as you can act out what is happening. Also, you get a better understanding of the character traits.

An exciting week next week: I can't wait for the Bethlehem Bandits performance on Tuesday. The children have been working so hard and it's really coming together nicely. Our dress rehearsal will be on Monday so could your child please bring in their costume and whatever props they may need.  AND THEN, on Friday, we have our Anglo-Saxon day. This should be lots of fun! I hope you found the costume ideas helpful and cost effective (FREE)! Remember the afternoon will be quite a messy one so if you don't want the costumes getting a bit mucky then please get them to bring in clothes that can get messy and warm as I hope to be outside (weather dependent).

A huge well done to Sienna and Aria for being our readers of the week, Henry and Harley for being our writer's of the week and Chilali for being our visible learner of the week!

We hope you have a fun-filled weekend!

Signing off from Mr. Langley, Mr. Bishop and Mrs. Hodge.

It is beginning to feel very christmassy here in nursery this week. The tree is up and is looking amazing after the children spent time decorating it. They did a great job.
This week on the funky fingers table, the children have been using their fine motor skills to practice threading onto the christmas tree, using the shaped buttons which they were naming as they threaded them.
The children have enjoyed trying to wrap boxes for presents on the tuft tray which they were then able to put under the tree in our christmas homecorner.
In the book corner, Santa has come to visit with the help of some alien friends as we look at the story "Aliens love panta claus"
The children have been practicing hard for our nursery nativity which is next Friday (15th). We look forward to seeing you.

Enjoy your weekend everyone,

Julie and Sarah

What a Week!

We have had a lot of fun in Penhallow this week! The snow fitted perfectly with our learning about the seasons and what we can expect in winter! The outdoor classroom looked beautiful covered in snow and we were still able to explore the ice and snow that was left when we returned safely on Friday.

We had a visit from the library van on Friday, it was lovely to send two passionate readers to the van to pick some new books for the school! We loved the illustrations on the side of the van!

Our Nativity practice is going well and the children are doing brilliantly at remembering their lines, positions and a lot of new songs! "We are so excited!"

Well done to Amelia for getting her 11 club badge in 99 club this week. We have begun looking into subtraction in maths and the Year 1s are doing a fantastic job in their 'first, then, now' stories. Keep practicing your number bonds to become more confident with our addition and subtraction topic. We will move onto looking at 2-D shapes before the Christmas Holidays!

Well done to our 'People of the Week' this week. Theo was picked for his enthusiasm to learn in the classroom, he makes us laugh and smile every day! Casey was picked by Mrs G for being 'great' at everything! Well done!

We added dribbling to our ball skills this week and enjoyed playing a game of playground style table football.

The children were excited to join the older children in their classrooms to help decorate this year's lanterns. We hope you have a lot of fun if you are able to join in with the festivities in Polperro on Saturday night.

Remember as Christmas creeps up, the weeks are filled with festive fun! Tuesday is the School Art Day where the glitter will be well and truly out! On Thursday, be sure to wear your Christmas jumper (with school uniform) for the gift room day. Friday is the day of the Christmas Fair.

We hope you enjoy a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday.

Mrs Taylor and Mrs G.
