Another busy week at school has included two special visitors to Chaipel Class to help with their learning about World War Two. Rev Richard shared his family’s intriguing WW2 stories and Ava’s dad shared some fascinating items from WW2. In today’s assembly, Penhallow Class sang ‘In 1666, The Great Fire of London’ to everyone. They learned this as part of their enquiry about what happened in London a long time ago. More information regarding your child’s week at school can be found on their class blogs.

Dropping off in the morning Please ensure that your child arrives in plenty of time before the gate closes at 8:45 in the morning. The start of the school day is very important for children as this sets the scene for them and they miss out on important messages and learning if they are late.

Supporting your child with maths Thank you to those of you who have completed our short maths questionnaire (attached) regarding how you feel about supporting your child with maths at home. If you have not done so, it would be really helpful for us if you could fill this in and return it by email to secretary@polperroprimary.co.uk

Safer Internet Day 2024 Safer Internet Day 2024 takes place next Tuesday with celebrations and learning based around the theme ‘Inspiring change? Making a difference, managing influence and navigating change online’. Safer Internet Day is a great opportunity to focus on online safety with your child, whatever their age. The UK Safer Internet Centre has created a range of pages to help you talk about these issues and ideas with your child, no matter how much time you have and in an age-appropriate way https://saferinternet.org.uk/safer-internet-day/safer-internet-day2024/parents-and-carers The NSPCC also offers valuable advice to help you learn about staying safe online as a family here: https://www.nspcc.org.uk/keeping-children-safe/online-safety/

Children’s Mental Health Week Next week we will be taking part in Children’s Mental Health Week. The theme this year is ‘My Voice Matters’. My Voice Matters is about empowering children and young people by providing them with the tools they need to express themselves. This year, we want to empower children of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to work together to create a positive change for their mental health and wellbeing. Our aim is for Children’s Mental Health Week, we want all children and young people to be able to say – and believe - “My Voice Matters.” As parents and carers, you play an important role in your child’s mental health. There are free resources here which you may wish to look at beforehand. https://www.childrensmentalhealthweek.org.uk/families/

Menu Change 8th February On Thursday next week there will be a special menu for National Pizza day, please see menu attached and log in to Parentpay to make your child’s selection for this day.

Have a lovely weekend.

Talland's Class Blog 2.2.2024

Happy February everyone!

A busy penultimate week of Spring term 1 for Talland class...

Maths:
Year 4 have been looking at multiplying 2 or 3-digit numbers with a 1-digit number (21 x 4 = or 342 x 5 =). We've used lots of resources to help show how creating groups can assist you when trying to solve the problem. We've also been using column method strategies to check that our answers are correct.
year 5 have now completed their multiplication and division unit and will begin fractions next week. Why not quiz your child on either multiplying a 4- digit number by a 2-digit number or a division problem where a remainder is required...

English:
We have just finished writing a biography about an inspirational person of 'Power'. Looking at Talland's work, I've seen some fantastic examples. Who did your child write about?

Computing:
We've been getting extremely technical in computing. The children were introduced to Micro:bits where they were creating algorithms. These algorithms enabled the Micro:bit to light up their names through the LED lamps. Next week, we will be measuring sound and temperature with these fun little computers.

Well done to the players that represented Polperro in the football match this week! They worked really hard and should be proud of their efforts! Also, congratulations to Skye for being noticed as our visible learner of the week - her excellent behaviour and hard work has not gone unnoticed.

That's all from us. We hope you all have a lovely weekend!

Signing off from Mr. Langley, Mr. Bishop and Mrs. Hodge.

It has been an exciting week in Chaipel this week, with many 'guests' visiting our class to support and enrich our enquiry into WW2. We started off the week by sharing our WW2 evacuee letters with each other. We gave positive feedback in areas of strength and also where we feel our peer's next steps could be.  We have moved onto poetry: writing a Free Verse poem about the D-Day landings. This links into the Fowey Young Writers and Artists competition and their theme of 'beaches' and Chaipel will have the opportunity to enter their final piece into the competition, should they choose to. Exciting times!

In Maths, Y5s have been multiplying using the long column method. Mixed reviews at the moment but it is just the start of their journey and they will have mastered it by next week - hopefully! Y6s are learning about Ratio and Proportion and are steaming ahead.

Guests
We have had the pleasure of having Caterlink in to bake WW2 eggless carrot cookies on Wednesday, followed by Reverend Richard talking about his father's childhood evacuee experiences. If that wasn't enough, Ava's dad then arrived with primary sources from the war. We saw photos, ratio books, letters, wireless reports, telegraphs and medals. We have been truely blessed this week and thank everyone involved for giving up their time.

Trip
So, it's our trip to Bodmin Keep on Wednesday. Just a reminder that it is school uniform and children will require a drink, snack and packed lunch. Please let the secretary know if your child requires a school packed lunch please. The trip is in normal school hours so please ensure that your child arrives promptly at school on Wednesday as we will be leaving shortly after 9am.

That's all from Chaipel, so have a lovely weekend and see you all on Monday!

Crazy Cars

Landaviddy finally made their toy cars this week! We had to employ our growth mindsets, but everyone managed to independently create their car. We even had a go at sawing the dowels for our axles! In History, we have been learning about the history of transport. Can you remember when the steam train was invented and by who? In Geography, we looked further into physical and human features by comparing those we would find in Morocco and Cornwall. We also conducted a traffic survey and bird watch of our local area.

In English, we have started a new unit, reading the story 'The Lonely Beast' by Chris Judge. We have engaged in whole class discussions, asked and answered questions using illustrations, collected amazing vocabulary to describe the Lonely Beast and written our own Missing posters!

In Maths, Year 2 have been multiplying and dividing by 2 and 10. Year 3 have been multiplying and dividing by 4 and 8. We've used lots of pictorials this week to support us with our learning. Next week, we will be finishing off this unit, ready to move on after half term!

Congratulations to Isabelle for being Landaviddy's Person of the Week and a big well done to Reuben for his 33 club and Archie for his 55 club!

We hope you have a great weekend and look forward to seeing you on Monday.

It has been a busy two weeks at nursery. We have been exploring transport and answering our enquiry question of "How do we get from one place to another?"
The children have enjoyed talking about different types of transport and how they get around, how they get to nursery and what transport might take them on holiday. They have enjoyed craft activities such as making aeroplanes and paper plate cars and as some children talked about coming to nursery on their scooters, they were thrilled to make their own from lolly sticks.

In maths, we have continued to practice formimg and writing numbers and the children are doing well with this.

In phonics, the children have been learning to recognise and name some instrumental sounds, practicing to make loud and quiet sounds with instruments and learning how to copy a sequence of body sounds such as clap hands, stamp feet and click tongue.

On Thursday, we have enjoyed celebrating Chinese New Year. As it is the year of the dragon, the children coloured in dragon faces. They used glue to stick and make chinese lanterns and for snack, explored some chinese foods such as rice, noodles and prawn crackers (which were a firm favourite)

It is INSET tomorrow (Friday) and then next week is half term. We hope you all have a lovely week and look forward to returning on Monday 19th February ready to start some new and exciting explorations and adventures.

We have enjoyed a fantastic week in Penhallow this week. The fun started as soon as the children arrived on Monday morning when we had a visit from the Looe Fire Engine and some of the Looe crew. The children learned about fire safety and what to do in an emergency and were able to explore the fire engine and discuss how a modern fire engine has improved from the fire engines used in The Great Fire of London in 1666.

In maths, we continue to explore numbers to 20, using number lines and practical ways to understand one more and one less.

In English we continue with adding a narrative to our wordless book, Journey. The magical adventure continues and children consider what they would draw if they had a magic crayon.

We have been looking at London Landmarks and children have enjoyed making these in our construction area. Junk modelling has also been a huge hit towards the end of the week this week where a brilliant fire engine was made by a group working brilliantly together.

Well done to Ada and Lowen for being Penhallow's 'People of the Week,' they showed us brilliant examples of the School Values this week, well done!

Remember to keep up with your reading at home and practicing those KIRFs. TwinklGO! has an array of books and activities to enjoy.

We hope you enjoy a lovely weekend and look forward to another week of fun learning next week!

We have had a busy week in Chaipel Class! In English, we have been draft writing, editing and improving and writing up our evacuee letters in best. The quality of the work produced is absolutely incredible and everyone has really immersed themselves in life as a WW2 evacuee.

In Maths, we have been tackling converting a range of units of measure, including reading and interpreting timetables, and are confident in this area now - even Rosie May is smiling!

Our enquiry has taken us to learning about Morse Code, trialling our circuits in Science to send messages WW2-style! We have been learning about music linked to the 1940s and have been using instruments to re-create some old favourites. In PE, Chaipel are learning about passes in Netball and we are learning how to create dance motifs (with a WW2 theme) in Dance.

Y6s
I just want to say a big 'Thank You' to the parents for taking time out to see Mrs Hillman and myself regarding the SATs home/school revision agenda. Books will be sent home with the children on Monday to get revising on.

School Trip
Our trip to Bodmin Keep is coming up quickly. Can you please ensure that you return your slip as soon as possible so that I can finalise numbers with the organisers.

That's all from us so have a lovely weeked!

Talland's Class Blog 26.1.24

Happy Friday everyone! Here's to the end of another brilliant week!

More spy formulated dance moves were added to routines - the choreography is coming along nicely in dance. Chest and shoulder passes have been practiced in netball. Accuracy and power is improving!

As you can see, this week got sciencey! We started by looking at powered and non-powered home appliances and whether they are battery powered, mains powered or manually powered. THEN, we got electrical and found out how circuits work and made our own. Now, that was fun!

Talland made some fantastic Climate Change posters in Geography and differentiated between urban and rural causes that effect our planet.

In maths, the year 4's have been making numbers 10 and 100 times greater and the year 5's have been getting their teeth stuck into division.

In English, we have completed our class look at Thomas Edison and all of the amazing events that took place during his life. The children have now begun to research influential people of 'Power' of their choosing. Next week they will write a biography about that person. Why not ask your child who they are writing a  biography about...

Gentle reminder for all children to have PE kids and appropriate footwear in school ready for PE on Monday's and Tuesday's.

Well done to all of the Cross Country runners' this week. It sounds like you were ALL amazing! Congratulations to Nuala for being nominated as person of the week - I loved the biography you created at home about Thomas Edison! This piece of work is now on our WOW WALL!

Attached is a copy of homework for children to have some fun with - it would be great to see what they produce! I'm really hoping to see some exploding volcano's!

We hope you all  have a fantastic weekend!

Signing off from Mr. Langley, Mr. Bishop and Mrs. Hodge

Another week has flown by in Landaviddy!

We have continued our Enquiry in Computing, by writing our own blog posts and taking photos. We have been inspired by what we have learnt so far and enjoyed reflecting on our prior learning. We then had a go at typing these up on the ipads. In Geography, we used Atlas' to identify and map physical and human features of Morocco. Finally, in DT we created adverts for our toy cars which we will be making next week!

REMINDER: Please bring in your recycled material for making your cars by Monday 29th January.

In Maths, we have been continuing to apply our division and multiplication knowledge. Year 2 have been dividing and multiplying by 2. Year 3 have been focussing on the 3 times table. We have been using pictorials to support our calculations too.

In English, we have been writing up our instructions for our Moroccan Lemonade. I have been blown away by the writing produced. A special mention to Lily (Y3) and Anya (Y2) for their writing (see photo). Well done everyone! Next week, we will be looking at Journey Narratives linked to our Enquiry 'How Far Can We Travel?'

Congratulations to Harley and Heidi for being Landaviddy's People of the Week. We had no one for 99 club for this week.

We hope you have a fabulous weekend!

This week at nursery, we have been discussing people who help us. The children have enjoyed talking about different services such as the police and fire service. They have made their own fire engine collages using different shapes to create them and have been encouraged to name the shapes they use. We have been practicing cutting skills in the tuft tray with the children using the scissors to cut out and stick to create an ambulance. The children have enjoyed exploring our fire themed tuft tray where they have been asked "Can you put the fire out?"
We have explored hygiene practices this week such as washing hands and the children have made pictures to represent their dirty hands and the water to help wash them.

In maths, we have continued to practice forming and writing numbers.
In the book corner we have enjoyed a range of books associated with people who help us. These have included "Ambulance in action" and "Flashing fire engines".
The children have enjoyed taking part in phonics where we have this week explored the vets. The children have made different animal sounds, moved in the way that different animals do, explored inital sounds in animal names and guessed the different animals from a simple description.

We look forward to another busy week next week.
Have a good weekend.

I hope that the children have enjoyed telling you all about our morning with the Looe Fire Service today. We had lots of fun when they visited us at school and learned lots about fire safety.

Jack Blackmore and his officers were brilliant at showing us how the equipment worked and we were also lucky enough to be able to sit in the fire engine and aim the very powerful hose at a target.

A great morning of learning had by all!

Chaipel

by Emily Randle

It's been another busy week in Chaipel and we are well into our enquiry,  exploring how World War II affected different people in British society. This week, we have been learning about the Home Front and how civilians played just as much of a part in our victory over the Axis as the Bristish troops themselves. Next week, we will be learning about rationing and how the women and farming community supported the Home Front efforts. We are getting very accomplished at creating circuits in Science and are going to be setting up investigations next week, based on a range of set criteria, which we will write up, analyse and evaluate afterwards.

English
We are currently writing up the draft copy of our evacuee letters. The level of vocabulary and range of sentence structures Chaipel are producing will make for a fine read! Everyone is putting their best efforts in and showing a real determination to produce their best work to date! Once we have completed this, we will move onto learning about the Battle of Dunkirk and some of the Allied troops evacuation back to 'Blighty'. This will result in us producing a piece of written work, linked to the Fowey Young Writers and Artists competition theme of BEACHES. Children will have an opportunity to submit their work should they choose to.

Maths
We have been working together to tackle Converting Units! We have been in and out of the Learning Pit all week - as you can imagine - but we are persevering and learning is DEFINITELY moving in the right direction! Converting units of time, reading timetables and solving problems involving unit conversion is where our learning is going next week.

School Trip
I have arranged a trip to Bodmin Keep - Cornwall's Army Museum on Wednesday 7th February. It's going to be a fun-packed day where the children will be involved in a tour of the museum, Home Front workshops, military team building and a whole lot more! Letters will go out with more detail in the coming days...

Our WW2 Dance and Music lessons are in full swing and will be learning a range of music and musical steps from the 1940s which we will apply during our WW2 day at the end of this enquiry.

Thanks, once again, for your continued support!

Miss Randle, Mrs Clary and Miss Gilbert.

It has been another wonderful week of learning in Penhallow class where we have made the most of the beautiful dry, crisp weather. We took every opportunity we could to head outside and explore the frost and ice discussing the changes that were happening in our school garden because of the seasons. We incorporated this into a dance lesson on Friday by using the count of 8 to spin like falling leaves across the field! A wonderful way to finish a fun week!

Our enquiry question: What happened in London a long time ago? is in full swing! The children are loving all things Great Fire of London and I have attached a few photos below. This week we learned about the past and that the Great Fire of London happened a long time ago. We looked at timelines and learned about centuries. We used chalk to create a fabulous picture in art and in music we are beginning to learn a new song about London in 1666.

In English, we have been enjoying looking at a book that is a little different to most; 'Journey' is the most beautiful wordless book. We are using the book to spark our imaginations with WOW vocabulary we could use to tell the story ourselves. I have been so impressed with what both the Reception children and Year 1 have come up with so far! The journey will continue next week where we discuss, should the girl venture into the castle to continue her adventure? What will she come across?

In maths, we are exploring numbers to 20, considering one more and one less, representing the teen numbers in lots of different ways. All children enjoyed having a go at 99 club this week where lots of children were able to achieve their '11 club' the first of the challenges. This focusses on adding within 10 and number bonds. Remember that there are plenty of games on the TwinklGo! code to practice these. Well done to Kai, in Reception, who received his 11 badge. Also, well done to Darragh, Jemima, Tommy, Ida and Alfie too.

Our 'People of the Week' this week are Evie D, Finn and Dexter who have all showed examples of the school values this week! Well done!

It was lovely to see so many at the Celebration Assembly this week. Well done to Evie and Hector, our 'Writers of the Week' and Ada and Rosie, our 'Readers of the Week.' It is lovely to see the class showing such a love for reading at school. Please continue this at home by reading with your child every day, please put a note in their reading diary to tell us how they got on. This feedback is really helpful so we can work with them on anything they are finding tricky. Please remember that book bags should be bought into school every day. This is important as it enables us to change reading books regularly, send work or communications home and importantly, every Friday, we try to get to the school's wonderful library where the children are able to pick a book of their choice to look after and enjoy for the week. Also on a Friday, the Twinkl read together books are sent home (these are the paper ones). Please ensure these are read at some point over the weekend as they consolidate the sounds and tricky words we have been learning in the week, these are then changed to the new one on a Friday.

I will be inviting you in soon for a short workshop on how we approach reading and particularly phonics in the school. I will send these details out very soon.

On Monday, we are very excited that we hope to have a visit from the local Fire Service. The children will enjoy a morning full of activities where we hope to see a variety of vehicles that are used by the fire service today.

Enjoy a lovely weekend!

Mrs Taylor, Mrs G, Miss Colton and Mrs C.

We are officially half way through Spring Term 1, and we are well underway with our Enquiry 'How Far Can We Travel?'. In Science, we looked at identifying different materials around the classroom. In Geography, we have been researching about Morocco, learning about their food, language, population and location. In Computing, we learnt how to conduct a safe internet search and how we can make this suitable for kids. Towards the end of the week, we have a go at making mock-up car bases in DT, in preparation for making our toy cars. All the children worked so hard at making these. We definitely utilised our Growth Mindsets to complete our mock-ups.

In English, we collaborated and followed a recipe on how to Moroccan Lemonade and loved taste testing our creation. We have started writing up our instructions for this and look forward to finishing this off next week.

In Maths, we started the week by calculating how much it would cost to make Moroccan Lemonade. This was a challenge but we persevered and everyone was able to correctly make up the money they needed in order to buy their ingredients and equipment. Both Year 2 and 3 have also been focussed on making equal groups by grouping and sharing this week too.

Congratulations to Reuben for being Landaviddy's Person of the Week. A Big Well Done to Lily for achieving her 44 club and Emma for her 55 club.

I hope you enjoy a lovely rest and see you next week!

This has been another busy week where we have celebrated our Readers and Writers in a special assembly with parents, grandparents and families. We have also enjoyed celebrating our times tables superstars from Kai in Reception who achieved his 11 club badge to the pupils in year 6 who achieved their bronze badges.

We are excited about the Fowey Festival  Competition for writers and artists which is open to all children aged 4-16 living in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. The theme this year is ‘Beaches.’ We will be encouraging the children to enter the writing competition at school and you may wish your child to enter from home also. Please see attached flyer for information.

We will be taking part in Children’s Mental Health Week which is taking place from 5-11 February. The theme this year is ‘My Voice Matters’. My Voice Matters is about empowering children and young people by providing them with the tools they need to express themselves. This year, we want to empower children of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to work together to create a positive change for their mental health and wellbeing. Hello everyone,
We have continued to explore winter this week at nursery. The children have spent time outside exploring ice and using different tools to break it and explore what is inside. We have been making glitter snowflake mobiles and the children have explored the tuft tray with different materials in and winter animals.
In our book corner, we have been exploring the story of "Stickman" and the children collected sticks from outside so they could have a go at making their own stick figures.
In phonics this week, we have been exploring People who help us. Activities have included listening to sounds in our environment, exploring initial sounds in words and sounds that instruments make when played. You can help your children at home by listening and talking about sounds heard in both the indoor and outdoor environment.
In maths, we have been counting and practicing writing numbers.

This week we have introduced Bertie Bear to the children. Bertie will take it in turns to go home with the children, where he will have lots of adventures, big or small and the children will be encouraged to draw a picture of their time together. We look forward to seeing what he gets up to!

Have a good weekend.

Welcome to a New Year of Amazing New Learning!

It was wonderful to welcome the children back to a new year of learning and as soon as they ran onto the playground the excitement of 2024 began!

We have zoomed into our new topic with the enquiry question: What Happened In London A Long Time Ago? The children are very excited to learn about what happened in our country's capital and why it is important to learn about something important that happened 358 years ago.

In maths, Reception are subitising whilst the Year 1s learn about the number 10 and beyond, venturing into the teens. This term we will be learning facts within 20.

In PE we have enjoyed being cars, learning some foundation game skills and today we have enjoyed dancing like the summer rain and spinning like snowflakes! Please remember that our PE days are Wednesdays and Fridays. Children should have their PE kit in school every day.

We had a fantastic music lesson with Mrs Butlin where we explored pitch. Ask your child to say hello to Daddy, Mummy or Baby bear! They will show you how their voice can change pitch. "Hello Daddy Bear!"

Well done to Finn, Brody, April, Theo and Sonny who achieved their 11 badge in 99 club today. Remembering our number bonds to 10 will really help us with this and our maths KIRFs for this half term are attached to this blog.

Alongside our KIRFs, attached to this blog, is the Knowledge web which outlines the areas we will cover in our wider curriculum lessons this half term.

Well done to our 'People of the Week'
Last week was Tommy for showing an amazing attitude to learning on return to school. This week, Iylah, Rosie and Evie D were picked by adults for showing brilliant examples of the school values.

Enjoy a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday for another fantastic week of learning!

Landaviddy   Friday 12th January 2024

Welcome back! We have had a very busy first full week back in Landaviddy. We started off the week with Mrs Phillips, were we had our first Dance lesson in PE and began a new unit in RE were we will be exploring 'What do Christians believe God is like?'.

This half term our Enquiry question is 'How Far Can We Travel?'. We have already had some fantastic questions from the children ... Why do trains need rails? How far is Morocco? How can you design a vehicle? How do our bodies react when we travel?

We started our learning journey in Geography, by applying our knowledge of the continents and oceans from last term, to locate these on a world map. In DT, we began designing our own toy cars from recycled materials, which we will be making this half term! We can't wait to see how they come to life in a few weeks time.

In English, we have been exploring instructional writing. This week, we have focussed on revising different sentence types and practised using imperative (bossy) verbs when writing commands. During one lesson this week, we watch a Jamie Oliver recipe video had a go at writing a set of instructions for a Christmas Apple Crumble. The only catch was we had to watch a video...with no sound! This led to all the children having to using their imaginations when writing their commands and deciding upon the best bossy verbs to use. Today, we collaborated to peer assess and edit our commands, applying our knowledge of written instructions so far. Next week, we will be making Moroccan Lemonade and writing up our recipe.

In Maths, we have continued working hard on our Multiplication and Division unit. Year 2 have been looking at using the multiplication symbol to write number sentences and making connections with repeated addition. We have also been exploring arrays and how we can use these to support writing multiplications. In Year 3, we have been drawing arrays and using them to form written calculations. We have also touched on revising multiples of 2 and we discussed what makes a number even or odd.

Congratulations to Reuben and Zac for being Landaviddy's People of the Week and a Big Well Done to Oliver for achieving his 44 club badge this week!

Attached below are Landaviddy's Knowledge Web for Spring Term 1, KIRFS and Homework grid for this half term. Please continue to read and practise your Times-tables at home!

We hope you have a lovely weekend!
