Talland's Blog 10.11.23

Another fabulous week in Talland class. Lots of wind and rain - we've been using moody weather like this whilst writing our epic tale of Beowulf to help build tension in our writing. The children have loved this story - a truly gruesome yet entertaining 'hero vs beast' story!

In Maths, the year 5's are ever so close to completing their first unit of multiplication and division. Whilst the year 4's have just begun a short unit of area, which is lots of fun!

The children have been introduced to our enquiry question for this term: Why 'Settle' in Britain? And we've sank our teeth straight into history. The information we are finding out is really interesting. Did you know that when the Angles, Saxons and Jutes invaded Britain, Britain became a non-Christian country for 100 years?

We did a lovely Remembrance Day activity. We joined forces with Chaipel class and created remembrance crosses for those that fought for us during the World War's. Truly remarkable people!

Next week, we will begin learning our songs for the Christmas Play -very exciting!

Well done this week to Harrison, who was noticed for our pupil of the week. He is always kind to others and is becoming a fantastic role model!

There's lots going on next week:
-Book fair on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday
- Odd socks day on Monday
- Children in need day on Friday (spots, pajamas, colourful clothes) are some fun options your child could wear to school!

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend,

Over and out from Mr. Langley, Mr. Bishop and Mrs. Hodge.

Thank you for coming into school this week for parent consultations. It was lovely to see so many of you and to share the children’s learning.

We have had a very moving week in which the children have participated in a Remembrance Day assembly run by Rev Richard after which our older children wrote messages of thanks on crosses to the people of Polperro whose names are on the war memorial in Polperro. The crosses will be placed on the memorial on Sunday at 10.50am.

On Tuesday, Chaipel Class had a visit from the poet, Sally Crabtree, as part of an international project which involves them and children from France writing poems about WW1. Their final poems will be written on paper containing poppy, cornflower and forget-me-not seeds and in July the poems will be flown to France and dropped from a plane in Northern France. Please see Chaipel Class’ blog for more details.

Odd Socks Day, Monday 13th November It is Anti-Bullying Week next week and the theme is Make a Noise About Bullying. As part of antibullying week, we will be joining in with Odd Socks Day on Monday 13th where adults and children wear odd socks to celebrate what makes us all unique. All the children need to do is wear odd socks on Monday 13th please.

Book Fair, next week, Monday 13th November – help us buy more books for school Our book fair starts next week and will be held on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at 3:15 pm after school. The fair will held be in Chaipel Class. A percentage of the profits will go to school funds and enable us to buy more books for school. If you would like to buy any books from the fair, you will be able to pay in cash or online if you have your phone with you. You can pay for books online while you are at the Fair by scanning a QR code on your phone to easily access the Scholastic parent pay website.

Children in Need, MUFTI Day Friday 17th November We have asked the School Council what they would like to wear for our Children in Need MUFTI fundraiser day on Friday 17th November. Please send your child in wearing spotty clothes, pyjamas or anything colourful on the day. A donation of £1 or more to Children in Need will be collected in class. We also have a supply of “Pudsey Ears” for the School Council to sell, cost £2.50, with all profits going to Children in Need.

Clubs Reminder that clubs will start next week. Please inform us by email or phone call, which clubs you wish your child to attend. Our choir (year 1 to year 6) rehearses every Thursday lunchtime with Mrs Butlin. Please let us know if your child would like to sign up to attend this weekly.

Christmas Lunch The Christmas lunch will be held on Monday 18th December this year. Please see the attachment below for the menu. If your child would like a Christmas dinner, please ensure you have booked their meal by Friday 15th December as this tends to be very popular with the children. Please book their meals on Parentpay, even if you do not need to pay for their lunches. If you have any problems, do not hesitate to contact Mrs Turnbull on secretary@polperroprimary.co.uk.

Have a lovely weekend.

Remembrance -
This image of poppies has been created by the children in Penhallow Class. We painted it by printing with our  hands and some potatoes after being inspired by the stories from Reverend Richard in our Remembrance Assembly this week. We have learned what is special about the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month and on Saturday this year, We Will Remember Them.

What Can We Celebrate?
We have continued with our enquiry question by asking why do we celebrate Bonfire Night? We learned all about Guy Fawkes and his plan to blow up the Houses of Parliament. We discussed what we enjoyed about the celebration and how it might have changed throughout the years.

Science -
We looked at different materials and their qualities by investigating and grouping different objects found in and around the classroom.

PE -
Year 1s were lucky enough to enjoy a PE lesson on the playground this week, in between the showers, which they thoroughly enjoyed! We are looking at Ball Skills this term as well as Gymnastics which the children have been thoroughly enjoying, ask to see their pike or tuck positions!

Music -
In music, we have introduced the first of the songs for our Nativity, which we are very excited about!

Awards -
Well done to all of the children for all of their super efforts in their learning this week. The following children were recognised by adults for showing kindness, politeness and determination in their learning; Amelia, Theo, Casey and Martha. Well done also to Lowen and Ada for being given a Golden Ticket to have lunch with Mrs Hillman next week, this is for kind behaviour that is recognised by the year 6 children on the playground. Amelia also received her first maths award for getting ten questions correct in her 99 club. Well done to you all!

Other News -
Thank you to all parents that came along to parents evening, it was a pleasure to meet you all and discuss your child's progression into their new school year. The feedback you provided was really useful and I hope that you have had the chance to try out the new games on TwinklGO!
The codes are: Reception Phonics LF0482; Reception Maths AK7180; Year 1 Phonics SV4169; Year 1 Maths TJ1263.
On Monday next week we are invited to come to school in odd socks, this is to spread awareness of Anti Bullying Week.

Y6 Bloggers are here!

Let's welcome Rosie Grace, Rosie May, Daisy and Jack - our Chaipel class bloggers. From now on, these incredible young people will be writing our class blogs each week: let Miss Randle hand you over to them...

This week has been jam-packed full of learning. We started off our wonderful week with a visit on Tuesday by an amazing poet called Sally. Sally influenced us to write our own poems about World War I after showing us how to create a 'magic writing ring' AND how to eat our words - literally!! Our poems will soon be sent off (by plane) over the field, where the Battle of the Somme took place, and scattered. The paper is made of seeds (the German, English and French flowers which all mean peace) which will eventually decompose and the seeds will grow new flowers. - ROSIE MAY

This week, our English and Maths has been out of this world! In Maths, Y5 have been tackling prime and square numbers and factors. Whilst we have been looking at Brackets, Order, Division, Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction in Y6 (BODMAS). In English however, we've been planning our log entries and even designed our own planets to go and explore! - ROSIE GRACE

On Wednesday Reverent Richard gave an amazing assembly for Remembrance Day and then we got the opportunity to put the names of the 46 soldiers - who died in the war from Polperro - on crosses with a message of thanks from us. These will be laid on the memorial, in Polperro, on Sunday. - DAISY

Congratulations to Ivy for achieving her 88 club and to Wyatt, Noah and Rosie G for being our People of the Week.

Next week, it is Odd Socks Day on Monday so wear your school uniform but make sure your socks are odd and as wacky as possible! Our Book Fair is on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday in Chaipel Class at 3.15. It is Children in Need Day on Friday so come in pyjamas, spotty clothes or bright colours. Bring £1 in with you to help the children in need.

Finally, clubs begin next week  so if you want to go them go to our secretary (with a grown up) and ask to sign up. - JACK C

Quick message from Miss Randle:
I have attached the Wider Curriculum Knowledge Web, Homework Grid, Curriculum spellings and KIRFs for this half term below!

Have a great weekend,
from JACK C, ROSIE G, ROSIE M and DAISY R

This week, we have enjoyed reading the story of the "colour monster" and exlporing our emotions and how we feel.
The children have painted tubes and made their own colour monsters and given them happy or sad faces. We continued our enquiry question of "How does colour make us feel?" and the children explored a range of emotion books. They explored a colour themed tuft tray where they had to sort different coloured objects into the correct coloured bowls and on the funky fingers table, the children sorted pom poms into the right coloured colour monster cups.
Throughout the week, the children have been making poppies for remembrance Day. They created some in paint using an apple to make the shape. and painted their hands where we used these handprints to make a poppy wreath. On Wednesday, they enjoyed decorating biscuits to make poppies.

We look forward to starting a new enquiry question next week.
Wishing you all a lovely weekend,

Julie and Sarah

Welcome back Landaviddy. We hope you had a lovely half term break!

This week has gone by very quickly! We launched our brand new enquiry 'What was new about the Stone Age?' by thinking about timelines and how we can plot historical events in chronological order. In Art, we began to explore examples of cave art and identified what we liked and how it made us feel. We experimented using our sketching skills to replicate sections of the cave art we observed.

In Maths, we have continued our addition and subtraction unit. This week all the children have shown great perseverance when working mathematically.

In English, we have started a new unit linked to our enquiry. We've made predictions about an unfamiliar story using evidence from the illustrations and all the children engaged in whole class discussions when reading our focus text, 'Stone Age Boy' by Satoshi Kitamura. Next week, we will focus on developing our sentence writing and will aim to begin innovating the story when crafting our own narratives.

In celebration of Black History Month, Landaviddy have been learning about the Olympic gold medal boxer, Nicola Adams. We have loved learning about her life and the passion she has for boxing. The class shared what they believed to be her best qualities in a whole school assembly; KIND, FEARLESS, EXCELLENT, DETERMINED and MIGHTY.

Congratulations to Charlie and Flora for being Landaviddy's People of the Week. A big well done to Harley for achieving his 77 club badge this week!

We hope you have a lovely weekend and look forward to seeing you all on Monday.

It's been a ghostly, historical, fun week back in Penhallow!

The start of Autumn term 2 has had us all busy and excited for the new learning in Penhallow!

We began our new topic: What Can We Celebrate? by looking a little more at why it is important to celebrate Black History Month, the children produced a fantastic collaboration colouring which we were proud to show off in assembly. It now sits proudly on the school hall wall and we are able to recognise which part we coloured at every lunchtime! I will pop a picture up on the blog for you to see on Monday. (Please look out for it when you come in next week for parent consultations.)

In assembly, we learned why we celebrated Halloween and the children really enjoyed understanding a little bit more about the events surrounding Halloween, especially the celebration of the end of Harvest and the beginning of winter.

In English we have now completed our Funnybones work and start a firework project on Monday to coincide with our celebrations topic.

In maths, Reception are looking at shape, focussing on triangles and circles. This inspired us to look at some Kandinsky artwork and we had a go at printing our own Kandinsky style art on Tuesday. The Year 1s have been learning all about addition and were able to explore this with lots of different practical activities. We consolidated this by writing down our own addition sentences.

Well done to our Readers of the Week this week, Evie, who is wowing me everyday with her determination to learn more! Also, Ida who bursts on the carpet trying her hardest in phonics every day! I'm very proud of you both.

Well done to our 'Person of the Week' this week. Mrs G chose Max for his super attitude to learning in phonics. April is so polite every morning with her very kind and positive 'good morning' to the adults! She was chosen as the Year 1 'Person of the Week' and also Felix for working brilliantly with others in the classroom to show how fantastic a role-model he can be to others.

Well done on a fantastic week, we really look forward to another fun week next week where I look forward to sharing the children's learning journeys with you at the parent consultations.

Enjoy a lovely weekend!

Mrs Taylor, Mrs G, Mrs Pollard and Mrs Robinson.

Talland's Blog 3.10.23

A massive welcome back to the new exciting Autumn term. We hope everyone had a lovely break and enjoyed Halloween!

It's been great getting the team back together this week.

I've put a couple of throw back pictures in our blog from last term showing some budding musician and fabulously creative artists.

This week, we have had a lot of fun finding out about Mary Seacole for Black History Month. I was so proud of every child in Talland class. They projected their voices and acted brilliantly for the rest of Polperro School during the assembly.

English is lots of fun at the moment. We a immersing ourselves into the blood-curdling mythical tale of Beowulf. We have designed our own mythical hero/heroine and began thinking of some powerful verbs to demonstrate how the murderous beast might travel.

We finished the week with a kahoot quiz. How much do the children know about our new enquiry question? The question will be revealed next week. Why not ask your child to have a guess at what they think it might be...

Well done to Joe and Aria for passing the next stage in our 99 club challenge, Jack and Henry for being recognised as our 'Reader's of the Week' and Tabbi for our class member of the week. Excellent effort!

Please remember PE is on Monday's and Tuesday's and children should always have a PE kit in school, please remind children about reading journals and it would be amazing if you quized them on their 3 and 4 times tables.

We hope you have a brilliant weekend and enjoy some fireworks.

Signing off from Mr. Langley, Mr. Bishop and Mrs. Hodge.

This first week back has just flown by. We started off with launching our new enquiry, "How does the Moon affect our lives?" We took part in a Kahoot quiz assessment, identifying what we know already, and then decided what it was that we want to find out.

Our English is also taking us to the stars. We are looking into descriptive language and will build up a bank of knowledge in order to write a Space Log about a newly identified planet! Everyone is super excited about the enquiry and eager to get writing. In Maths, Y5s are looking into factors and multiples whilst the Y6s are tackling a range of division strategies. In Art, we are learning to create a Retro-Futuristic composition. So watch this space for updates on how it is going...

We celebrated Black History Month by investigating the inspiring space scientist, Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock. We shared our new learning with the rest of the school in our Black History Month Celebration assembly and everyone was amazed at this incredible woman's accomplishments. If your child hasn't already told you about Dr Maggie, then ask them about her - a true inspiration to young people!

Congratulations to Leon (Bronze) and Max B (55) for achieving their 99 Club badges this week. Harry and Martha were recognised for their kindness, determination and positive learning attitudes in our Celebration assembly.

That's all for now. Have a lovely weekend and if you are out and about for Bonfire Night, stay safe!

We have had a super busy week at nursery. We are exploring our new enquiry question of "How does colour make us feel?"
We started off the week with some spooky halloween activities. The children enjoyed scooping out the pumpkins on the tuft tray and making potions with the black and orange pasta with some children commenting that it gets black at night and sometimes it can make them feel scared. They enjoyed making paper plate pumpkins and spooky cotton wool ghosts.
The children have made firsework pictures by rolling marbles and many of the children commented that they were going to see fireworks and all of the different colours that they bring. We looked at our non fiction book on bonfire night and then recreated some fires by painting the childrens hands.
In maths, we have been counting and sorting pom poms onto pumpkins.
It has been a lovely week of fun filled activities and learning and we will continue to explore colour next week when we look at the story of the colour monster!

Have a lovely weekend everyone and we will see you on Monday.

Penhallow's Class Blog 20.10.2023

We had a fantastic final week to our first half term as Penhallow Class. We finished our enquiry; What Makes Me Amazing? by looking at our last of the senses, taste. The children enjoyed guessing what the different senses were and there were some very funny faces when tasting the slices of lemon to learn about what sour tasted like!

In maths, Reception headed up to the garden where they were speckled frogs, sitting on speckled logs, eating the most delicious grubs! Yum, Yum! The Year Ones have been investigating part-whole models in the start of their addition and subtraction unit, which we will continue with after half term.

In English, we have been looking further at the story Funnybones. The children loved making their own version of the story by banning the word 'dark'. Children should have come home with a copy of this in their book bags for you to enjoy reading together. They will also have their up-to-date 'read together' book and I have also updated TwinklGo! with some relevant books and games if you would like to enjoy over the half term break.

We celebrated the end of term with an assembly on Thursday morning where we were able to recognise our 'People of the Week'. This week, Hugh, Kai, Esme and Dexter were chosen for their amazing attitude to learning by the adults. Well done to them all!

We hope you all enjoy a lovely break and look forward to seeing you refreshed ready for Autumn 2 on Monday 30th.

Chaipel's Choctastic Week

What a fabulous last week of term! Our school trip to St Ives was an incredible experience as we learnt about the remarkable life and times of the late sculptor, Barbara Hepworth; immersing ourselves in the exhibits in the Tate gallery and... making CHOCOLATE! Chaipel class were a credit to Polperro School and have individually written 'Thank You' letters to Coco Kitchen, raving about their experience. A huge thank you to the Polperro Arts Foundation and to FOPS for part funding the trip and enabling us to have such a rich experience.

We completed our enquiry into the Mayans by making headresses and ordering ourselves by way of 'importance', and sampling some typical Mayan food - including the 'bitter water' Xocoltl (chocolate drink of the gods). Noah quite enjoyed it!

Congratulations to Ava and Bayley for being recognised in our Celebration assembly on Thursday.

I just want to say a big thanks to you all for your continued support in making Chaipel a happy and successful learning environment.

Have a lovely half term break and see you all on Monday the 30th!

We also enjoyed a wonderful music lesson with Mrs Butlin.

In English, we completed our recounts of our class trip to Porfell and have began to self assess our writing to help us identify our next steps. In Maths, we have continued to work through our new unit on Addition & Subtraction which we will continue to explore this further after half term.

In celebration of Black History Month, we have learnt about the life and achievements of Nicola Adams. The children loved learning about her life and we can't wait to share what we have found out with the rest of the school.

This week we have finished exploring our enquiry question of "How do i know it is autumn?"
The children enjoyed making autumn plates using sticks and finger painting on different autumn coloured leaves. They carried out printing using different fruits and vegetables in the paint and during outdoor learning, went on an autumn welly walk.
At story time, we have enjoyed books such as "The leaf thief" and in cooking the children made cheese shape biscuits by mixing, stirring and rolling.

It has been a busy few weeks, but we have now come to the end with INSET tomorrow and then half term.

We return to nursery on Monday 30th October

Have a lovely half term and we look forward to seeing you all back soon.

Penhallow Class.

Another fantastic week of learning in Penhallow!

In Reception, the children have been doing so fantastically in their phonics lessons, another four sounds learned this week to add to the collection and the children are applying these brilliantly! I hope you are seeing the amazing developments in their reading at home, with plenty of Robot Rick arms thrown in too! The children would have bought home another 'Read it together' book today and there is also plenty of choice on twinklGo! which I am updating regularly. Reception code is: LA6703.

In maths the children have been impressing us with their understanding as we investigate 1,2,3 and beyond.

Reception joined the class to paint their own 'Pop Art' images, they look fantastic and they very much enjoyed covering Mrs Taylor's face in lots of different coloured paint!

They loved the Circus style PE lesson and we really enjoyed our music lesson with Mrs Butlin this week, where the children were able to try out a variety of instruments.

We also enjoyed a fantastic assembly with Rev. Richard. We talked about all things Harvest and discussed the importance of sharing and what we are thankful for!

Year 1s have also been wowing with phonics where this week we added the 'ee' sound spelt 'ea' to our knowledge. A 'Read it together' and 'Write it together' book has come home today and it would really help the children to consolidate their learning if you could complete this together. There is also plenty on twinklGo! which I will update regularly. Year 1 code is: RY1594.

Well done to all of the children who were nominated by Mrs Robinson today for 'Person of the Week' and being just brilliant!!! In PSHE we had a wonderful lesson discussing how 'proud' feels. I am so proud of all of the children in Penhallow for being so determined in their learning during this first half-term!

Enjoy a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you next week for another great week before we break for half-term.

Talland's Blog 13.10.23

And as the penultimate week of our first half term comes to an end, I wanted to wish all of our Cross Country superstars the best of luck. I hope you all had lots of fun and thoroughly enjoyed yourselves. I'm very much looking forward to hearing all about it on Monday!

It's been a lovely week here in Talland class. Lots of group activities, lots of hands on activities and lots of active learning!

We've had fun running around outside whilst learning some spellings at the same time.

Year 5's are getting ready for their post assessment for addition and subtraction and the year 4's have been learning how to subtract two 4-digit numbers and needing to exchange - tricky stuff!

In writing, we have been creating our super plans ready for our independent write about their 'Great tree' in the rainforest. I'm excited to read these!

In Science, we have continued to learn about sound and how it travels. Why not ask your child about the Science experiment. it was lots of fun and it got quite messy (colourful sticks flying everywhere).

The children have been learning new tunes and using new instruments in music - we definitely have some talented children in Talland!

Congratulations
Well done to Hamish and Thomas for being recognised in Maths. Well done to Sienna and Lily for being recognised as our visible learners. And well done to Chilali for being chosen as child of the week!

We hope you have an amazing weekend!

Signing off from Mr. Langley, Mr. Bishop and Mrs. Hodge.
